We Remember How Leaders Make Us Feel

Over the years, I have noticed something interesting while working with professionals and leaders.

People rarely describe a good leader by saying,

"They were the smartest person in the room."

Instead, they say,

"I trusted them."

"They listened."

"I felt comfortable sharing difficult issues."

"They stayed calm when everyone else was reacting."

Trust isn't built because someone has a leadership title.

It is built through everyday conversations.

Sometimes, one conversation can strengthen trust.

Sometimes, one conversation can quietly weaken it.

That is why communication is one of the most important leadership skills today.

A Leader I Still Remember

A senior leader once attended one of our leadership programmes.

He was respected for his technical knowledge.

His team admired his work ethic.

Yet engagement within the team was low.

People completed tasks, but very few shared ideas.

During one coaching conversation, I asked him,

"When was the last time you asked a team member for their opinion—and simply listened?"

He smiled and said,

"I ask every day."

A few weeks later, after observing one of his meetings, he realised something.

He asked questions.

But before people finished answering, he had already started giving solutions.

He wasn't trying to dominate.

He genuinely wanted to help.

However, his team experienced something different.

They experienced being interrupted.

Once he became aware of this pattern, he made one simple change.

He listened until the other person had completely finished speaking.

Within a few weeks, his team became more engaged.

People contributed more ideas.

Meetings became more collaborative.

Nothing else changed.

His communication did.

And trust followed.

Trust Is Built in Small Moments

Many leaders believe trust is built during annual reviews, major presentations or difficult negotiations.

Those moments matter.

But trust usually grows in much smaller moments.

It grows when people feel heard.

It grows when leaders remain composed during disagreement.

It grows when leaders admit they don't have all the answers.

It grows when actions consistently match words.

Trust is rarely created by one impressive speech.

It is built through hundreds of ordinary conversations.

Why Communication Often Breaks Down

Communication problems are rarely caused by vocabulary.

They are usually caused by assumptions.

We assume people understand us.

We assume they interpreted our message the way we intended.

We assume silence means agreement.

We assume disagreement means resistance.

These assumptions quietly influence relationships.

This is why communication is not simply about speaking clearly.

It is about checking whether understanding has actually taken place.
